Encountering people with a range of complex needs

Case study: When working in the AOD sector you will encounter people with a range of complex needs which makes them vulnerable to engaging in harmful behaviors, some of which may be life threatening. As a health and community services worker you have a duty of care to ensure you comply with legal requirements such as mandatory reporting and take appropriate action when you identify clients who may be at risk of suicide. In Case study 2, you will explore suicide from the perspective of a worker who is responsible for identifying signs, and taking appropriate action to increase the safety of individuals at risk. This requires you to have specific knowledge and be alert to the signs and risk factors for suicide, and to have an understanding of strategies that can be put in place to increase safety when you are working with clients who are identified as being at risk. This includes the development of safety plans and contacting emergency and specialist services. As a final note, please take care of yourself when completing this unit and seek appropriate support should you need it. There are a number of resources in the learning materials to refer to.
