Assignment task:
Write response to the posting: Discuss the theory
The Jean Watson-developed Theory of Human Caring is the theory that I apply to my daily life. The fundamental principle in nursing highlights the significance of caring in healing. According to Gunawan, Aungsuroch, Watson, and Marzilli (2022), this theory is an integrative approach encompassing nursing care's physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions, emphasizing the interactions between nurses and patients. This theory covers essential elements, including the transpersonal caring relationship, the Caritas processes, and the caring moment or occasion, all of which contribute to its comprehensive framework. Caring is what pulls everything together in healthcare.
Apply the theory to your practice.
Throughout my 25-year career as a labor and delivery/mother/baby nurse, Watson's theory has played a crucial role in influencing my approach to patient care. I prioritized showcasing my expertise and building confidence with patients, particularly mothers, under my supervision. I once cared for a mom who only understood Chinese, but she understood "caring and compassion" through my actions. My objective was to demonstrate my proficiency in efficiently managing their care. Over time, I have come to understand the importance of combining compassion, empathy, and all-encompassing viewpoints, as Watson advocates. This progress has allowed me to provide skilled healthcare and establish more profound and supportive relationships with my patients. Applying Watson's theory, my primary focus has been establishing transpersonal caring relationships, wherein I forge profound connections with mothers throughout labor and delivery. According to Gunawan et al. (2022), this relationship extends beyond the physical discomfort that they are experiencing, allowing for an awareness of their emotional and spiritual requirements, which in turn helps to cultivate trust and an atmosphere of support. Every interaction with a patient is considered a potential caring moment (Gunawan et al., 2022), where my caring demeanor seeks to acknowledge the patient's humanity and contribute to their recovery process. One crucial element of Watson's theory that I fully accept is the comprehensive approach to providing care. This entails attending to patient care's physical, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions. I embraced this all-encompassing approach, connecting my care with Watson's holistic perspective on nursing (Gunawan et al., 2022).
Furthermore, Watson's approach emphasizes the significance of self-care and introspection (Gunawan et al., 2022).
I understand the need to maintain my physical and emotional well-being to deliver compassionate and attentive patient treatment.
How do you expect it to grow in your future role?
I look forward to using Watson's theory to develop my profession further as I advance into a new leadership role. Nursing leadership includes the management of tasks and teams and cultivating and encouraging the compassionate dimension of nursing (Caughey, 2024)
Successful leadership in labor and delivery involves an in-depth understanding of the physical and emotional dimensions of the childbirth process. As part of my responsibilities, I will include Watson's ideas of compassion, creating a work climate that prioritizes empathy in our actions. To accomplish this, new nurses will be mentored in creating loving relationships with their patients and promoting holistic care, and the value of self-care will be emphasized during staff training. Jean Watson's Theory of Human Caring has profoundly influenced my nursing profession. Its principles have allowed me to provide care for my patients that goes beyond their physical needs and touches on emotional and spiritual dimensions. As I assume my new leadership position, I plan to utilize Watson's idea to cultivate a compassionate and comprehensive atmosphere, guaranteeing the preservation and advancement of nursing as a caring vocation.
