Reflection: Think about a neighborhood within your community or a neighborhood that you have visited that has some of the following elements: abandoned houses, high crime rates, or insufficient lighting, etc. What recommendations would you suggest to improve the physical dynamics and also deter criminal activity?
Preventing and reducing crime in a community is the obligation of every citizen in the community. Everybody should work towards building a community where teens, kids, and adults all feel safe. Installing CCTV cameras within the community can help in monitoring criminal activity. They are essential in the apprehension of offenders when CCTVs capture crimes o video. Crime rates will go down because criminals will be aware of the CCTVs and therefore refrain from any criminal activity; hence crime rates will go down.
Improving street lighting is essential for deterring crime and bettering the community. The necessity for more effective street lighting is an essential provision that every administration should provide. Enhancing environmental measures by installing brighter lights in unwell lit zones can help decrease crime rates in neighborhoods (Lawson, Rogerson, & Barnacle, 2018). This is because poor lighting makes it easy for criminals to participate in crime without being noticed. Moreover, engaging with the community can help maintain law and order. By talking with individuals within the community, one can learn the normal happenings within the neighborhood. When one gets to know individuals living within a certain community, it becomes easy to identify something wrong. This keeps criminals on alert because they are aware of cohesion and engagements in the community, which can easily blow their cover; hence, they stay clear of criminal activity.
The existence of illegal firearms within the community can upsurge the risks of violence, although some people keep guns to defend themselves. Therefore, it is essential to guarantee that only individuals with licenses hold guns in the community and are fully trained to use the weapons safely, and they also safely store the weapons (Lynch, Logan, & Jackson, 2018). Finally, educating the community is a significant step towards deterring crime. Helping children and all community members learn about the consequences of crime can help them think through these issues and learn how to handle conflict to avoid getting involved in crime.
