Effects on plants of Air pollutants
SO2, O3 and NO2 are strong oxidants and can bring about significant changes in plant cell chemistry. The general effects of pollutants are as follows:
- Damage to leaves,
- Inhibition of photosynthesis,
- Reduced nutrient uptake,
- Leaching of plant nutrients in soil,
- Release of poisonous metal ions that are normally bound to the soil and
- Killing of essential microorganisms in the soil.
