Effects of tragedy memorials

At the time of the 9/11 tragedy, the media played a vital role in keeping the world informed, as much as possible, about every aspect of the event. In addition, each year there are many ceremonies the commemorate the tragedy and recognize the many lives devastated by it. Similar events take place throughout the year to recognize the lives lost of other national heroes and those who died in other events, such as WW II or Vietnam. While I recognize the merits of such practices, do you think there are any negative consequences of such ceremonies on memories and the subsequent effects on functioning?
