Effects of long term malnutrition on children
- The effects of long time malnutrition are more severe in children.
- Unlike adults children do not have sufficient amounts of carbohydrates and fats in reserve and the rate of metabolism is also high.
- So in long term malnutrition, their body reserves are used up very quickly.
- When the body proteins are used up the child quickly loses body mass.
- Such children have very low resistance and cannot defend against diseases.
- The most common disease in these children is persistent diarrhoea.
- As a result of diarrhoea they become weak.
- In such children the growth of the brain becomes slow. So they have difficulties in learning and other mental activities.
