Effectiveness of individual wellness counseling on wellness

Assignment:

Officer burnout is something that generally every officer will experience at one point or another, and agree with the results that were provided. I agree with the results because the nature of law enforcement is stressful, officers are expected to respond to calls with little known about the situation and then act accord lying to the situation. "A significant body of research contends that policing is one of the most stressful professions in American society." Another factor in officer burnout I believe in is, the fact that we live under a microscope on and off the job. We get one Atta boy to ten this is what you did wrong". The public and our own departments are securitizing our every moves to make sure what we are doing is correct and by the law. Every situation we encounter is going to be handled different because there will be different people involved.

Most of the stress that I felt when I was a correctional officer was not from the job of Corporal or even the job itself of working in a jail, but it came from the Administration and the stress that they placed on Corporals and above. The way that this needs to be presenting would be to start presenting the findings to the officers on the patrol and moving up the chain of command from there. Another way to present this would be to explain that officers dealing with stressful situations and needing to speak with someone does not mean that they are incapable of continuing on their job. Being able to open up to other officers, asking for help when needed is not a sign of weakness as so many believe but actually a sign of strength because they are asking for help.

"In law enforcement, officers frequently experience high levels of stress that often lead to negative health implications. As officers enter the profession of law enforcement, they are healthy individuals; however, by the time they leave the profession, their physical and emotional health and longevity are below average. Because of these reasons, wellness among officers is particularly important to address within the counseling profession given the high occurrence of lifestyle-related diseases and disorders that contribute to officers' susceptibility to premature morbidity and mortality."
