Assignment - Video Remix Essay
Each of the previous assignments in this class has asked you to critically engage with media - by examining your own personal relationship, outside representations, or capitalist structures - and think about the different ways that media works to affect perception and structure meaning. Your final assignment in this class will build on these analytical skills by asking you to think about how you might remix media to make a compelling argument about media. As V:glinia Kuhn notes in her essay, "The Rhetoric of the Remix," remixes can be viewed "as a digital utterance expressed across the registers of the verbal, the aural, and the visual...thus, remix is a form of digital argument that is crucial to the functioning of a vital public sphere."
For your final assignment, you will work in small groups of 2-3 to produce a video remix essay in which you create a persuasive argument about a contemporary cultural topic. While these essays will be in audio-visual form, you should approach this assignment as you might a term paper: video essays should have a clear argument, they should reflect significant research on the subject, and they should be polished and clearly organized. All video essays should be 2-5 minutes long.
This is a great opportunity to get creative, consider the power of alternative modes of argumentation, and get more comfortable manipulating media to comment on media. With all that said, this will be a labor-intensive project, so you should budget your time and divide your labor accordingly.
