With the new Ontario budget, tuition fees are likely to go down for university students in the province. Let us look at the history of Tuition fees in Ontario and also see how tuition fee inflation in the province compares against that of some other provinces and overall inflation rate.
A) Download the period 1981 to 2016 the annual CPI for tuition fees for the provinces of Ontario, Quebec, and BC. Also download the CPI All-Items for the same period in Canada. This series will be the basis of comparison for determining how tuition inflation is different than the general inflation rate.
B) Once you have your data, re-reference all these indexes to 1981 (i.e. 1981 = 100). Make a? table of indexes that includes each one of these series. At the bottom of the table on the last blanc row, include the calculated overall percent change for each of the indexes from 1981 to 2016 (this is only one estimate per series). See how much higher the inflation rate for tuition fees is higher than that of the all-items CPI.
