Problem
I. Nonprofit organizations due often play a critical role in filling in the gaps. Food banks is an amazing example because often times people who may not be eligible for food stamps could seek assistance from food banks. I've helped families who were not eligible for food stamps not because they didn't meet the income criteria but because they didn't have legal documentation to apply for the benefits. Or sometimes families struggle to make ends meet and food stamps are inefficient, or if they are struggling with homelessness and cannot physically cook the food they purchase from SNAP benefits, food banks are there to provide support. Another great example that you gave is homeless shelters which I am forever grateful for because our office worked with such a high number of the homeless population where housing programs were not a first option. They filled in the gap for us tremendously because if we think about it, the application process for affordable public housing programs can be lengthy especially because there are waiting lists considering the high demands. Even the homeless shelters have high demands at times, but they are highly beneficial in filling the gaps of providing supplemental support to the government role of providing social services to the citizenry.
