Does post embed opportunities for children to collaborate

Assignment task:

Respond to at least two of your peers' posts. Based on the ideas shared in your peer's post, assess their response and provide feedback using these three questions:

  • Does your peer's post embed opportunities for children to collaborate? What are some ways this can be improved? Give specific suggestions.
  • Does your peer's post empower children to have opportunities for leadership? What are some ways this can be improved? Give specific suggestions.
  • How will you use this new learning in your work with young children?

Your response should be a minimum of 250 words.

Discussion 1(Ashley)

Hey everyone,

My age group: Kindergarten

My developmental domain: Social Emotional domain

The type of performance-based assessment I will use for kindergarten students is a checklist based upon the state standards. I will use the checklist based upon the state standards based on the domain I selected which is the Social Emotional Domain. So for my state one of the standards that I would be looking for a kindergartener would be, "(3) Mental health and wellness--social and emotional health. The student identifies and applies strategies to develop socio-emotional health, self-regulation, and healthy relationships. The student is expected to:

(A) Identify their own feelings and emotions;

(B) Describe and practice calming and self-management strategies;

(C) Discuss how friends can influence a person's behavior;

(D) Demonstrate skills for making new acquaintances;

(E) Demonstrate respect and communicate appropriately with individuals; and

(F) Identify and practice ways to solve conflicts with a friend." (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, 2024).

So, for this state standard I would create an activities such as a chart for the students to color in which emotion they are feeling and then go and ask them to tell me what emotion they are feeling while walking around to observe the children working on the assignment and check off the skills they are able to do as we go along. This would be similar to using standard based grading which is what we currently use at the school I work at with is where the student has to master the essential standards by the end of that year.

I will incorporate the 21st century's 4 C's- collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity in to my checklist assessment. The students will have to select which emotion they are feeling and answer questions about various emotions shown on pictures of children and what they are feeling which covers the critical thinking aspect and creativity. Students will be asked to tell a story about why they think a child is crying based on showing the student images, which covers communication. A part in the activity can be asking students to come up with a silly rule that you have to do if they see someone upset such as make a silly face or give them a high five- this will cover the collaboration.

Which specific 21st-century strategy will you use to support growth of a developmental skill? List at least two strategies and activities. The two specific 21st-century strategies I will use to support growth of a developmental skill would be a whole child focus and cooperative learning. (Partnership for 21st Century Learning. (2019b). I would allow students to use a variety of hands-on activities, dramatic play, giving the students the opportunity to solve problems. These approaches support the 21st century strategy to support growth developmental skills while focusing on the social emotional domain.

Discussion 2 (Sharayna)

Age: Kindergarten

Domain: Emotional

Although there are many ways to understand each student's knowledge and skills, here is the performance assessment I implemented to assess and evaluate student's learning. Hands-on: This will include an activity that involves creating a project or performing a task. Students can communicate with their peers, collaborate, use critical thinking, and be creative. As the educator, I will model what I expect my students to understand and apply. I will prompt each student to think critically and in innovative ways. For example, we will list strategies for problem solving and conflict resolution as a whole group. Communication: I will ask students to share their ideas, what has worked for them when they have a conflict, and how they solved it. As a class, we will summarize what could have been better for next time. Collaboration: I will pair students up. I will teach them how to listen to one another and set the rules of cooperation and working together. I will encourage each student to be creative when conflict arises. Support students in being innovative in solving problems and coming up with solutions. The 21st century encourages students to adapt to Critical thinking, Problem-solving, Creativity, innovation, Adaptability, and Collaboration.

Authentic Scenarios: Presenting real-world problems relevant to student's lives.

Two activities:

1. Project-based learning: In the inside-out movie activity, students share their personalities with their peers. This activity will build a positive and respectful classroom tone.

2. Scenario-based learning: students will tell a story using realistic situations and active peer learning. Each student will have a turn to act out real scenarios using puppets, and as a classroom, we will solve the conflict with the skills we learned from the private lesson. I will also use situations I have seen in the school. I will help children understand and resolve conflict respectfully. Puppets are an excellent way to relay information to students, help them connect with the puppets, and retain the message being taught. Puppets help students retell information they've learned and remember to teach their peers. Puppets are essential for language and help students develop skills that will stick with them and be relatable. As a teacher, I often used puppets with my students who needed extra support with oral language. My students and I would name each puppet with a puppet for every emotion and time of the day, for example, mealtime, transition time, and group time.

Peer Interactions

Peer interactions are another vital context for learning. When engaged in peer play, children observe others and imitate or build on what they observe. They gain social and emotional skills when they try to create games and coordinate activities with each other. For example, children learn self regulation when they develop and play rule-based games and perspective when they negotiate the themes within dramatic play activities with others (Lee, Scott. 2019)
