A. Watch Surprising Truths About Legalizing Cannabis (video) by Ben Cort (approximately 14 minutes).
B. Read the sub-section entitled "The Rhetorical Situation," pages 378-380 in Subject & Strategy (located in chapter 12-"Argumentation"). In this subsection, you will find an explanation of ethos, logos, and pathos (pp. 379-380).
C. Review the Writing Assignment Scoring Rubric for grading criteria.
D. Explaining how Ben Cort uses one, two, or all of these "elements of argumentation" (379) should help you construct a rhetorical analysis in a paragraph or two.
a. In other words, does he appeal to his authority or experience (ethos)?
b. Does he appeal to the argument and topic itself by using information, evidence, and/or statistics (logos)?
c. Or, does he appeal to emotions (pathos)? Remember: humor can be an appeal to pathos.
