The nomination of Michelle O'Bansawin to the Supreme Court of Canada was recently announced. If confirmed, she will become the first Indigenous person to sit on Canada's 1 highest court. O'Bansawin is fluent in English and French. Some critics argue that the informal requirement that judges be bilingual in Canada's two official languages has led to more racism and exclusion in the justice system because it prevents many otherwise qualified Indigenous candidates from becoming judges.
