Problem
HIPPA the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 was implemented to protect the patient in several ways. As a result one of the Administrative Simplification provisions of HIPPA is to secure the privacy of the patient health data. In our daily routine we come in contact with specimen that are highly infectious and according to HIPPA the patient privacy is protected including the disclosure of any disease.
The question is:
Do you think that this privacy information should apply to laboratorians that will come in contact with this specimen? Yes or No, and Why?
