Thread 1: Corporate culture
When we talk of corporate culture we often talk as if this culture is a single unified thing and as if the values of a corporate culture are shared equally by all members of the corporation. The textbook raises some issues that call into question this idea of a unitary and uniform corporate culture. These issues concern 1) sub-cultures and hierarchies within the corporation, 2) the interpretative ambiguity of codes of ethics and other official statements of corporate culture, and 3) the various other identifications that members of a corporation may have beyond the corporation itself. Can you explain each issue in more detail, explain how it challenges the unity of corporate culture, and give some examples it illustrate the issue?
Regarding the unity of corporate culture, how much unity is desirable? Why?
Do you think a corporation has a right to impose a uniform corporate culture? Why or why not?
