This study examined the technical and symbolic work of the multi-school elementary principal in order to determine how these principals blend the leadership and managerial roles that define their administrative position. A qualitative multi-case study design employing informant interviews and participant observations was used to collect and analyze data from six elementary multi-school principals in a Midwestern state. An analysis of eight functional areas of administration from the principals across eighteen elementary schools resulted in a summary that identified serious technical and symbolic implications for the multi-school principal in five of these administrative areas. Examination of data also identified inherent challenges that these administrators faced in their leadership roles, strategies that worked, and suggestions for future practice.
