The educational principles derived from Piaget's theory of cognitive development include equilibrium, accommodation, and assimilation. Besides their cognitive development, a child also develops schemes, which refer to mental exemplifications of principles, objects, or individuals. The schemes can be altered or transformed through accommodation and assimilation. Assimilation refers to the information that we are already aware of. Accommodation is the process by which an individual adapts his or her knowledge to what is apparent. Equilibrium is the point reached by an individual when accommodation and assimilation have taken place to form a new development stage.
Vygotsky formed an exceptional theory on social learning for the purpose of understanding how individuals learn in social environments. He argued that educators have the capability of controlling numerous factors in an educational setting, such as responses, behaviors, and tasks. The three main educational principles derived from Vygotsky's theory in relation to cognitive development are that people learn and advance within their role in the community, language is the root of culture, and culture is important in learning.
In my opinion, Vygotsky's theory is more applicable in an educational setting. I believe that principles like cultural tools, dialogue, co-constructed knowledge, and scaffolding are all significant components of the knowledge acquisition of students. Educators provide students with useful strategies of learning that they adopt and use later by helping them with their proximal development zone. The focus of an educator should be the provision of assistance to learners in need, and cultural tools as resources of education. Peer and group learning enable learners to support one another through the process of discovery.
