Problem: How does existing scholarship (knowledge, previous research, evidence etc) allow us to bring together disparate episodes of resistance such as the siege at Masada and the Taiping Rebellion to better understand the forces of religion and imperial power in determining personal and regional/national/ethic identity? How have the narratives that emerged from these episodes continued to shape ideas about identity among Jews in the Middle East, and among the various racial and ethnic groups in China?
