Discussion about urinary tract infection


Problem: The patient, a preterm male infant, was born the day before admission in another hospital. He weighed 2,608 grams and had Apgar scores of 7 and 9. He was noted to have elevated temperature. WBCs were also elevated. He was transferred for investigative studies. A urinary tract infection was confirmed with a urine culture that was positive for E. coli, and the infection was treated with intravenous antibiotics. Left hydronephrosis was confirmed by bilateral renal ultrasound. Suspected septicemia was ruled out when all blood cultures were negative prior to institution of antibiotic therapy.
