As discussed in the textbook Chapter 10, most cultures emphasize different characteristics as valued and important for boys/men and girls/women. They also differ in how flexible these expectations are, and how accepting they are of norm violations.
How were you socialized with respect to norms for masculinity, femininity, and androgyny?
What cultural values were communicated to you about what was valued and what was to be avoided in your gendered behavior?
How do you see norms changing in the cultures with which you are most familiar?
