Problem: Imagine yourself in the role of a social community programs manager within a local council in a regional town. You are new to your role and have only recently moved to the town. As the practitioner, you receive a phone call from a local resident who tells you she is concerned about the wellbeing of her neighbour, an older person, whose name is Giuseppe M. She tells you Giuseppe has been living alone since his wife died about 5 years ago.
You and a colleague visit Giuseppe. You introduce yourself to him but discover he doesn't speak much English, although he is proficient in Italian, Spanish, and French. Unfortunately, you and your colleague do not speak these languages. Nevertheless, he welcomes you into his home.
Drawing on the above readings, please critically engage with how the following might shape your practice:
- Your positionality
- Your role and the role of the organisation you work for
- Your understanding of the community context
- Your theoretical approach to this situation.
