Problem: Original source from Jackie MacEachern, A New Approach to Bullying, p 49. Many assume that most bullies have poor social skills, self-control and/or a lack of understanding and empathy. Others see bullies as those with "a propensity toward delinquency" (Jacobson 439). While there are certainly bullies who fit the above profiles, they can also be bright students who are very respectful to teachers, and, therefore those "who do not exhibit behavioural problems in class may go unnoticed" (Packman et al 550). Victims do not always fit the stereotypical profile either, and some teachers miss problems in their classrooms and in the halls because they have the mistaken idea that those who are picked on are always students who are socially inept; therefore, those who were perceived as confident individuals were often overlooked as victims (Byers and Caltabiano 83).
