This is the first 'modern' war for the United States. Technology such as rapid-fire guns, photography, railroads, telegraph, and even hot air balloons changed not only how we fought the war but also how it was documented, why we had such high death tolls, and even the outcomes of some battles.
Your job this week is to find examples of different developing technologies, present your findings, and explain how this added to the idea that this was our first modern war.
Make sure to think 'outside the box' and beyond just weapons. Consider medical advancements, transportation changes, communication developments, espionage, and almost anything else you can think of to present to your peers.
