The judicial system, influenced by the PIC, is reactive rather than proactive. High-profile incidents often reveal that authorities had prior knowledge of potential threats but failed to act. The focus on punishment rather than prevention leads to missed opportunities to intervene before crimes occur. The fear of mass shootings, such as those in Las Vegas and Orlando, limits our freedom to attend public events without fear. Similarly, concerns about safety on public transportation and in public spaces limit our freedom of daily activities, making us wary of even going to the movies or a concert.
Private prisons, correctional facilities, and industries profiting from incarceration has cast a shadow over the freedoms we hold dear. This system, driven by profit rather than rehabilitation and community safety, pushes for policies that favor long sentences for non-violent offenders, rather than addressing the underlying social problems-poverty, addiction, and mental health issues-that often lead to crime.
This system thrives on non-violent offenders, who are cheaper to house and require less supervision. It's extremely profitable with each inmate generating daily income. With only one guard needed to oversee 400 non-violent inmates, it becomes a highly lucrative business to earn money off each day we are there. This profit-driven approach results in the incarceration of countless nonviolent offenders who are denied the necessary treatment for their mental health or addiction while behind bars, thereby perpetuating cycles of recidivism rather than tackling the root causes. The implications for public safety are alarming. Instead of focusing on rehabilitation and reintegration into society, our system emphasizes punishment, leading to an environment where everyone's freedom is compromised.
