Some people vote among their party lines without knowing or understanding what a candidate represents. Removing the party label, people are more likely to select a candidate based on merit. Assisted appointment also is appealing. Assisted appointment does give the governor the ultimate choice, but it's based on a list provided by the nominating commission. Having a third party select the names to present to the governor allows a little more diversity and fairness for inclusion. Additionally, after an initial term with assisted appointment, the person has to be reelected by a yes or no vote by the people. The people could essentially reject a judge from reappointment if they did a poor job during their term, regardless of what the governor or party lines prefer. "
