OSHA requires covered employers to collect certain data regarding workplace injuries and illnesses. Please find below three scenarios:
a) A school district's records indicate that 70 teachers in kindergarten through third grade have been diagnosed with strep throat which they believe they contracted at school in December and January, up from 10 teachers during other times in the school year.
b) A pizza restaurant's records show that 10 nighttime delivery drivers have been injured in auto accidents during deliveries which require overnight hospitalization, up from 3 the previous year.
c) A candy cane factory's records reveal that 30% of the employees who operate high-heat producing vats which produce the candy have suffered burn injuries on their arms from September to December - up from 5% of employees in the same job from January to August of the same year.
Select one of the three scenarios and imagine that you are a risk management officer in one of these organizations. This question requires a three-part response.
First, explain the lessons that you take away from this data and the questions that it raises.
Second, describe three (3) recommendations of specific policies and/or programs that you would recommend that the organization's executive team should adopt to reduce the number of injuries and illnesses reported within six months.
Third, explain why you think these strategies would be effective.
