Discussion Question - Criminology
Discuss whether the individual characteristics or social characteristics play a larger role in explaining the criminal behavior. Throughout history philosophers and scientists ad particularly criminologists proposed many different theories of crime. Early explanations of crime focused on supernatural powers, and they were grounded in religious doctrines and beliefs. Over time, different theories were proposed by the scientists. Some of these theories focused on individual characteristics such as rational decision-making, self-control, impulsivity, etc while others emphasized on the society and the socio-structural characteristics such as poverty, slum neighborhoods, disadvantaged communities, etc. Discuss these approaches. Which approach is your favorite one and why?
