Read the following from The Best American Magazine Writing 2013:
Charles C. Mann's "State of the Species"
Maggie Paley's "Terry Southern: The Art of Screenwriting, by Interview"
Students will write a research paper at the culmination of English Composition II. In this course, students have read various types of nonfiction prose and learned how to interpret and critique literary nonfiction genres, forms, and elements. Also, in studying the basics of the writing process, students learned the importance of a strong thesis statement and how body paragraphs contain the details, or evidence, in support of a paper's thesis statement.
Actively read the essays by Mann, and Paley. Post a brief statement of what you consider to be the main thesis of each of the essays. Then, read classmates' posts. Choose two classmates to respond to at a minimum. Compare and discuss your statement of the essay's thesis with the posts of these two classmates.
