Discuss your feelings about the multiple-selves theory. Do you feel the pull between what you want and what should be done? How have you reconciled these differences in the past?

I can agree with the multiple selves' theory. We are always faced with decisions in every step of our lives. We want to make the right choices but most times we are pulled to make instance gratification decision which a lot of times are not the right decisions. If we are trying to lose weight we need to stick to eating healthy foods but we don't always stick to the plan. I have become aware of my decisions and based my decision on the long run outcome rather than instance gratification.

Assume that salespeople's earnings in a certain firm have no limit and that a good sales rep can earn more than many of the company's sales managers. What incentive to these salespeople have to move into management? Especially consider those for whom a promotion means a decrease in income. Are you aware of circumstances like this? What affect did it have on the company and sales morale?

Ive seen an example of this from a friend that worked for quicken loans. He is a great salesmen and was working as a senior mortgage banker for years and was making a lot of money but also working a lot of hours. He loved to sell and didn't like to sit around and do nothing all day. He was then offered a position as team leader of the group which means he wont be selling as much as before but he would be helping other people close deals like someone used to help him do. It was the same hours but was more on a salary then commission. He felt like he wasn't doing enough, had a child on the way and just bought a house. He became overwhelmed from the position because he wasn't working up to his potential even though the company thought he was. The way a company sees it is different then the worker, he was bored and depressed and the company was extremely surprised when he applied to work in a different department which was in home realty, the hours were less but again he was selling and his commission checks are bigger. Its sad to say but now he watches how much work he puts in because he doesn't want the company to move him to a leader again so they don't take away his money. He does what he can to make money but stay under the radar. This isn't the way businesses should be ran but it happens more times then not.
