After the short movies, please discuss why trafficking occurs, how it relates to the discussion of transnational and international crime, and what international law could do about it.

Name the four types of international crime. What makes these crimes different from other crimes that may cross borders?

The TEDx talk "What Cops and Crowds Can Teach Us About Democracy,"Links to an external site. by criminal justice faculty member and political scientist Darrell A. Hamlin, explores the relationships between police and protestors and provides some lessons for the effective use of law enforcement in democracies

Questions:

Drawing on the TEDx talk by Darrell A. Hamlin, discuss policing in the United States in relation to the Black Lives Matter movement and to White Nationalism.

Please find other examples of police-movement interaction, such as the Arab Spring, the Yellow Vests in France, pro-Democracy movements in Myanmar and China, left vs. right movements in Hungary or Poland, Pussy Riot and other groups in Russia, the protest movement in Venezuela, anti-apartheid activists in South Africa, etc. It is always possible to find new and contemporary examples. Apply Hamlin's model to the examples to discuss how countries might have handled things differently, or discuss differences in how countries reacted to different protest groups.

What are the central characteristics of modern police, as opposed to other kinds of law enforcement personnel?
