Problem: In Barry A. Crouch's "White Violence in Reconstruction Texas" there is a discussion of the efforts by whites in Texas to try and maintain the prewar racial status quo as much as possible including through violence. Crouch looks at records from the special committee on lawlessness and violence and the violence register that was created by the Texas Freedmen's Bureau. What were some of the problems with these records? What can we still learn from them? What roll did organized, group lead violence play this post war violence against newly freed African Americans?
