Cultural Assimilation is the process whereby a minority group gradually adapts to the customs and attitudes of the prevailing culture and customs.
Identify two cultures from the First and Second Wave of immigration from Europe that have settled in Canada.
Focus on the following
• personal space and time orientation
• cultural customs and celebrations
• spiritual beliefs and/or religious affiliation(s)
• cultural practices related to health and healing
Discuss ways that these cultures have integrated their cultural traditions into the dominant cultures. What has been maintained? What has been lost? Why do you think this has occured?

1) First Wave: The French
Personal Space: New France stretched from Newfoundland to Louisiana and the settlements of the Thirteen Colonies, America's east coast, to modern day Minnesota. Despite this vast size, only smaller areas of land were actually occupied. These settlements were situated in Quebec, Montreal, Louisiana/Mississppi Valley, and around Lake Michigan (Mathieu).
