Problem
Hobbes and Locke offer different versions of the social contract theory. Hobbes holds that we are governed by our desires, and form a social contract to stay out of the state of nature. Consult "Hobbes Moral Theory" by Stephen Finn. Locke, by contrast, holds that we can use reason to rise above our desires. So we can use reason to govern ourselves and stay out of the state of nature that way. To understand the details, make sure to read "Hobbes and Locke on the State of Nature" by Tom Sorrell. Yet given these two different versions of the state of nature which is more correct, and why? What do you think?
