Problem:
In parts 2 and 3 of Heart of Darkness, there were many important moments. One moment in particular was when Marlow witnessed the brutal treatment of the native Africans by the European colonizer. I find this to be an important moment because it highlights the dehumanizing effects of colonialism and the darkness that it brings to the human soul. Another important event that I feel is important is when Marlow meets Kurtz. To me, this felt like a shift in the story, and it was clear that meeting Kurtz was important. Kurtz embodies the intimate corruption and depravity that can come from the pursuit of power and wealth in the name of colonial expansion. I believe that the message conveyed by the story is a criticism of colonialism and its harmful consequences on both the colonizers and the colonized. It illustrates how the desire for power and authority can lead to a decline in morality and a loss of humanity. The events depicted in Heart of Darkness are crucial in understanding the overall message of the story. After reading Heart of Darkness, when it come to determining whether it is anti-colonial or not, I believe it is anti-colonial.
