I. Discuss the role of the United Nations in international diplomacy. What is its main purpose? How successful has it been in its efforts to provide collective security and why is this the case? In what areas has it enjoyed a great deal of success?
II. Discuss the tools that the federal government, both congress and the Federal Reserve, might use to try and influence the national economy. Why is it so difficult for federal officials to control the economy?
III. There are different kinds of judicial philosophy in how to interpret the law. Outline the theories of judicial restraint and judicial activism. Discuss examples of the Supreme Court employing judicial activism and judicial restraint. What are some of the tools the other two branches might use to limit the powers of the Supreme Court.
IV. Although there are many complaints that government is too large, bureaucracies perform important functions. Describe the four main functions of bureaucracy and provide some examples of each. What specific tools are available to the president and to congress in their efforts to influence, or control, the federal bureaucracy?5. What powers are specifically granted to the president in the US Constitution? By what means have presidents been able to expand the powers of the office?
