Discuss the strengths and limitations of genograms

Assignment task:

In the Genogram Include 3 generations of family members, identifying family members by first names or initials (you may use pseudonyms to protect anonymity of desired). Use the standard symbols and format described in chapter 5 of the Family Health Care Nursing textbook. If you find it necessary to use a non-standard symbol or format, include this in the key/legend and provide a rationale in the narrative portion of the assignment. Depict the household of the core family unit that is the focus of the ecomap (see example of household depiction in the Robinson et al. textbook). Include demographic data that you deem most relevant to the assessment and the family picture as a whole (e.g. birth/death dates, dates for unions and separations, ethnicity, education, etc.). Include a key/legend for basic symbols and abbreviations and any nonstandard symbols used in the genogram. Include data necessary to support conclusions that are discussed in the narrative. In the Ecomap: Include a core family unit (typically a household) to represent the immediate family in the center of the ecomap. This should be the same as the household identified in the genogram. Use the standard symbols and format described in chapter 5 of the Family Health Care Nursing textbook Identify external resources for each family member and also for the family as a unit. Include lines to depict the nature and quality of relationships between the family and the environment Include a key/legend to show how the nature of relationships is depicted in the ecomap. In the narrative In an introduction, provide a brief overview of the family selected for the assessment, including the source(s) of data obtained. Describe the stage of family development for each generation in the genogram, and how this is relevant to the family at this point in time. Identify a major family theme based on your assessment data and interview with the family member(s). This theme should be apparent in the data. A family theme is a subject or topic that is repeated over time and which influences the behavior of family members. Examples are listed above in the instructions. Identify the data in the genogram and ecomap that support the significance of the identified theme across three generations, and discuss how the influence of the theme is similar or different for each generation. Discuss the strengths and limitations of genograms and ecomaps as family assessment tools in practice
