Problem: The two films Renegade and the apostle illustrate two aspects the emotional & experiential dimension of religion. The film Renegade shows depictions of the main character's religious experiences that he has after ingesting sacred, mind-altering substances given to him by a shaman. In the film, The Apostle we see the role of emotional expression in a charismatic church. The pastor is a very passionate leader who inspires his community, many of whom are especially attracted to the church because of its emotional dimension.
Discuss the role of emotion in religion. Does that attract you? Would you want to experience a religious or mystical experience from what you saw in Renegade?
