Teachers are legally responsible for the safety and well-being of students assigned to them. Although it is not expected that a teacher can control the behavior of young, energetic students completely, a teacher can be held liable for any injury to a student if it is shown that the teacher's negligence contributed to the injury.
Teachers have the same rights as other citizens; however, teachers must carry out their professional responsibilities within the guidelines of statutory law, state and federal education case law, and school district policies.
• Examine figure 7.1, "The Relationship of Ethics and Law to Three Examples of Professional Practice as a Teacher," and figure 7.4, "Teacher's Legal Responsibilities."
• Discuss the relationship between ethics and law. How are a teacher's legal responsibilities different from a teacher's legal rights? Word count: 950 to 1100 words.
