Some criminological theorists did not believe that labeling theories accurately and fully explained the criminogenic role inherent in the structure of a capitalistic society; a structure that created and perpetuated crime and criminals.
These theorists developed a new and radical criminological approach, predicated on the social power and the construction of crime - Conflict
Theories.
These theories focused on:
the struggles between individuals within the context of power and the differentials of wealth and opportunities
the inherent nature of social arrangements under capitalism
and the means by which the state secures the interests of the ruling class which gives the few at the top so much power over the surplus population at the bottom
Question: Discuss the relationship between crime and capitalism, as advanced by the radical and new criminological conflict theorists. Which theorist, in particular, do you most agree with? Why?
