Part I: Topic: What things are you observing/doing in the classroom that goes along with what you have learned about providing a developmentally appropriate environment?
• Are you seeing things you agree with and those that you don't?
• Discuss the positives and negatives and give reasons. This should be a well written response with at least 2 paragraphs. Discuss what this journal tells you about yourself as an educator and/or learner.
Part II
Read: Creating Trauma-Sensitive Classrooms
Discuss:
• Think about a time when you worked with a child who was having difficulty managing his/her emotions. What strategies did you use to support his/her self-regulation? What other strategies mentioned in this article might you try? If you have not experienced this, then think about strategies you would use.
• Describe how your current practices reflect the healthy, consistent interactions young trauma survivors need to support their healthy brain development. What additional practices might be beneficial for you to implement?
• How does trauma interfere with young children's imaginative play? How might you support the play of young children in your classroom who have experienced trauma?
