Using the Grand Strategy Selection Matrix, or GSSM (the GSSM can easily be found via a Google search), decide which one of the four quadrants General Mills fits best within?
The Grand Strategy Selection Matrix (GSSM) is broken into a competitive position and market growth dimension, and is useful when creating different or alternative strategies for an organization (Grand Strategy Matrix, 2010). General Mills operates in an industry where it has a strong competitive advantage and where there is strong growth. The first quadrant of GSSM indicates that a company has a strong strategic position, and the company has a strong competitive advantage that they can use to grow (Grand Strategy Matrix, 2010).
The food processing industry continues to have strong growth. Year over year growth in the food processing industry has led to a 29.64% increases in revenues for companies (General Mills, Inc., n.d.). In addition, General Mills continues to grow in countries around the world. Net sales in Latin America increased 12% in 2016, and total international sales for the company increased 3% overall (2016 Annual Report, 2017). Since General Mills has a strong brand within the food industry, and the company is operating in a growing environment, General Mills falls into the first quadrant of the GSSM
