Assignment task: A Class Divided, Attitudes, and "Others"
What to do:
1. Explore the film below and consider the week's course material.
2. Jane Elliot demonstrates how attitudes can be formed by developing an experiment in her third-grade class the day after Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed. Her lesson emphasizes the importance of socialization and the lasting impact of attitudes on children. After watching the video, apply an example or a point made in the video to one or two chapter concepts, ideas, or theories (see chapter 9, the Crash Course video, and/or articles). How would a sociologist discuss the point or example selected? Which sociological idea, concept, or theory help us better understand the example as noted in A Class Divided? Please summarize the the main idea, concept, or theory prior to application to your example. Keep it simple by focusing on a particular example (don't attempt to do it all) and be creative. :) As always, let's do this with a shared respect for each other while keeping in mind the rich diversity represented in the class.
