Assignment:
Reading the following chapter are given below is:
Sex Offender and Sex Crimes
In class, we've discussed the cycle of sexual offending. This is an important facet in understanding how an offender's deviant sexual behavior develops, moves to acting out, and later helps the offender maintain the behavior. Knowing an offender's particular cycle is a critical component of sex offender treatment (a topic we'll cover in more depth later in the semester). Offenders are generally required to write about their own personal cycle in order to develop a relapse prevention plan.
I've attached a copy of the offense cycle stages to this assignment to help refresh your memory. You should also refer to the Terry Chapter to help you with this assignment.
Purpose
One of the best ways to demonstrate an understanding of the offense cycle is to apply it to an actual case study. For this assignment, students will need to demonstrate a solid understanding of the offense cycle.
Instructions
After reviewing the Terry chapter on the offense cycle (see link below), view the attached video link on Victor Bernard, a self-proclaimed messiah who used his position as leader of the River Road Fellowship to molest several young girls.
Link
For this paper, students must identify Victor Bernard's offense cycle, including cognitive distortions, how he groomed his victims, planned his offenses, the role of fantasy, his justifications, etc.
I've seen the documentary, so I'm not so much interested in your retelling of Bernard's story. I want you to describe each stage of the cycle and apply specifically to Bernard's actions.

Actions
Obviously, you will need to fill in some of the blanks from the documentary. For this reason, biographical and news sources are acceptable. Wiki sources and other web-based opinion, non-researched sources are not acceptable. Check with Dr. Loftus if you are unsure if your source is acceptable. Students will need to use the documentary link as a source, as well as the Terry chapter.
This is a fact-based paper, so your opinions (I think, I feel, I believe) are not appropriate.
how to submit
- Minimum 5 pages of actual content
- APA format
- 10 to 12 font, 1-inch margins
- Minimum 5 outside sources (excludes Terry chapter, video link, and offense cycle handout)
- Canvas allows file types such as .doc, .docx, .pdf. If Dr. Loftus cannot open your paper, it cannot be graded.
