Assignment:
Discuss the concept of Texas "individualism" as referenced within the lecture materials for the section. Individualism places a heavy emphasis upon the citizen to "take care of business" on their own. This mentality still heavily influences our state politics and policies by reducing the role that the state government plays in the lives of the citizenry, though this ideal may be shifting as the nations and our state grapple with social justice/equality issues such as systemic racism which may not necessarily allow all citizens the same opportunity to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps", though it is clearly still prevalent in Texas as we have seen citizens and the government push back against the idea of wearing face masks or compelling them to wear a face mask under threat of punishment during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Does this concept of "individualism" or self-reliance work in today's society? Does Texas overlook the needs of many of its' most vulnerable citizens, or does it push them to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps" and become self-reliant as opposed to government dependent?
