REMOVAL OF NASOGASTRIC TUBE
I. List the equipment and the purpose for each piece of equipment needed for this procedure.
II. Discuss the components of the assessment of the client prior to performing this procedure.
III. Give the rationale for flushing the tube with 10 mL of water or normal saline or with 30 to 50 mL of air prior to removal.
IV. Explain the rationale of instructing the client to take a deep breath and hold it prior to removal of the NG tube.
V. Briefly discuss the rationale for clamping tube with fingers by doubling tube on itself and carefully removing tube.
VI. Verbalize information to be included in documentation of this procedure.
VII. Relate what the nurse should do in the following situations:
i. within 2 hours after NG tube removal, client's abdomen is showing signs of distention
ii. Epistaxis occurs with removal of NG tube
