Problem: We have learned from harsh experience that ignoring the regions we have studied this week allows geopolitical black-holes that are often filled by extremist groups or authoritarian governments (or both). But nation-building rarely works either. Based on your review of the readings and videos this week, what can, or should, be the role of the United States in dealing with the terrorist groups prevalent in often ungovernable regions or failing (or failed) states. What about expectations that we help allied governments when they are challenged by terrorist groups? What criteria would you use in deciding when the U.S. should involve itself and what that involvement should consist of? Easy question, right? Be sure to support your arguments with examples from the course materials.
