The pros & cons of a statewide probationary system

Pros:

  • rehabilitation: giving those who need the help they deserve so that they can hopefully get back into society as a stable individual and contribute
  • overcrowding: of prisons would be reduced and so we ensure that both money is being saved and we aren't constantly filling up prison slots that are meant for more serious offenders
  • Reduces recidivism: recidivism is when something is re offended so hopefully probation can reduce re offenders by giving them better mental stability

Cons:

  • risk to public safety: more often than not those who graduate from probation do indeed commit the same crimes again despite having been cleared and cleaned
  • subpar supervision: in large statewide systems, many resources would be needed to keep individuals in check and this could put a burden on probation officers as the demand for them would tremendously increase
  • limited deterrence/punishment: all in all it is a sort of soft punishment to give someone probation and despite what sob story they might give, they still committed a crime willingly and could commit the crime again.
