DISCUSSION 1 (Megan)

As an early childhood educator, when it comes to a support based my family has been a motivation to be a better educator and provider for my family. I have been able to take what I have learned in my education and use aspects of it to help educate my five-year-old daughter. My husband has also been working to continue his education, so I have been able to help keep him focused on his workload while we both work full-time jobs. He has been supportive to me by giving me time to complete my coursework and helping with any technical issues I have faced along the way. My mother has been an essential tool as a former educator for 40 years. She has experience which gives me a unique perspective on how support services can help students and resources I can look into myself to use in my classroom. She has also been helping provide me with tools to teach my daughter to read.

When it comes to reasons for continuing my education, I have many. The biggest being that I want to be a quality educator that helps children receive the early childhood education they deserve. By making school a fun and engaging place to be, students are given the tools to want to learn. I believe that educators are lifelong learners and if we are not learning something new every day, then we need to take a breath and just pay attention to the world around us. I want to continue my education so that I can grow and learn as a educator and if possible, advance my career as well.

When it comes to professional experience teaching children, I am currently teaching in a classroom of twelve two-year-olds. I am working in a private center where I have been employed for three years as a lead teacher. Before that I have worked in a few other private and public childcare centers since 2014 in the state of Iowa. Before that I subbed in a preschool program in Illinois for five years before moving to Iowa with my husband. I also helped tutor elementary students when I was in high school.

When it comes to important factors for child development and developmentally appropriate practices, it is my belief that children should be given the time to play and explore their environment in a safe manner. By providing them with a variety of learning activities which engage them while also working on essential developmental skills. Children need to be able to play for social interaction and by having children work in small groups they learn to share materials as well as communicate. Children must also learn about emotional development and by being able to label and control their emotions they can learn patience, empathy, and compassion among other important feelings. Children also need to be able to complete activities that challenge them not only cognitively, but physically. By ensuring that all parts of their development are given attention, a student can be well rounded.

The biggest take away from the course I just completed is that children need ethical teachers who are going to care about their needs while taking the time to form relationships. Educators provide children and their families with essential tools giving them the best possible chance to learn. Using what I gained from the last course, I will investigate how to apply the various resources provided to me while focusing on the needs of children developmentally. I will be ethical in trying to make the best decisions possible for my students. I will use the knowledge I gain to help provide children with access to a quality education and help them to gain access to resources which can help make them the best learner they can be.

My support base includes family, colleagues, friends, and mentors, each playing a crucial role in my educational journey.

Family: They have provided emotional and financial support, creating a stable environment that allows me to focus on my studies. Their encouragement has been vital, especially during challenging times.

Colleagues: As a DEI professional and student, my colleagues offer intellectual support and share insights that enrich my academic experience. They often serve as sounding boards for ideas and provide valuable feedback on my work.

Friends: They offer emotional support, helping me manage stress and stay motivated. Their understanding and encouragement are invaluable, especially when balancing school with other responsibilities.

Mentors: They have provided guidance, helping me navigate the complexities of higher education and offering advice on academic and career decisions. Their experience and wisdom have been instrumental in my progress.

Each of these groups has played a significant role in my success, contributing to both my personal and academic growth.

Continuing my education is driven by several key reasons:

The biggest takeaway from the course I just completed was the critical importance of integrating equity and social justice principles into every aspect of educational practice.

It reinforced the idea that as educators and leaders, we must not only be aware of the diverse needs of our students but also actively work to create structures and practices that support the success and well-being of all learners, particularly those from marginalized communities. This understanding will profoundly influence how I approach my work in DEI and education moving forward.

I will use the insights gained from the previous course to inform my approach in this current course by critically analyzing how equity and social justice principles can be applied in planning and implementing educational strategies. As a third-grade teacher, my journey in education has been greatly supported by my spouse, our four children, my colleagues, and friends. Their encouragement and understanding have been vital as I navigate the challenges of balancing my responsibilities at home, in the classroom, and in my studies. My family's unwavering support provides the emotional and practical foundation that allows me to pursue further education, while my colleagues offer professional insights that enhance my teaching practice. Friends keep me grounded, ensuring I maintain a healthy balance between work, study, and personal life.

I am continuing my education to deepen my understanding of child development and refine my teaching strategies. My goal is to stay current with educational trends and implement practices that best support my students' growth. Having worked as a third-grade teacher and volunteered in various children's programs, I have seen firsthand the impact that effective teaching can have on young learners. These experiences have reinforced the importance of patience, creativity, and adaptability in fostering a positive learning environment.
