Innovation is focused on taking current ideas and resources and creating a better way to provide care or to move a strategy forward more rapidly or see a way for using something for a totally different purpose that intended" . By recognizing challenges or problems, nurses can take these as opportunities to improve the future of healthcare. In my current position as an ER nurse, we are experiencing rapid staff turnover. Even newly hired staff is giving their notice rather quickly increasing staff burnout and fatigue due to increase workload and short staffing. "Health care providers at the highest risk of experiencing compassion fatigue are younger nurses and nurses with 2-5 years of experience. Compassion fatigue in younger or inexperienced nurses may lead to decreased retention, increased turnover, and the intent to leave the nursing profession entirely". "Nurses at an increased risk for burnout are often those working in high-acuity, high-intensity environments such as critical care, oncology, and emergency nursing". Since there is research that proves negative outcomes with rapid staff overturns, staff retention is an idea that would be investigated and discussed. A Staff Retention Committee can be developed; the committee would include both leadership/management and staff nurses. If leadership can develop staff retention perks, involving discussions and ideas from current staff nurses, nurse burnout and nurse turnover can be reduced. By reducing turnover and burnout, improved nurse to patient ratios, higher quality of patient care, increase in patient satisfaction, increase in staffing can be achieved for future nursing.
