Problem: The most dramatic period of language development. Oral vocabulary grows from 300 words to 1000. Child can comprehend but not yet use 2000-3000 additional words. The use of telegraphic sentences continues but syntactic complexity continues to develop. Child begins using functional words as pronouns, conjunctions, prepositions, articles, and possessives. As language develops, children gain confidence. Actively play with language by repeating new words as well as making up words and nonsense words. Enjoy rhyme patterns and repetition.
